Super Bowl 50 in San Francisco

San Francisco: the City by the Bay, home of the Golden Gate. It’s one of America’s most beloved and culturally rich cities. It is also home to this year’s Super Bowl 50, the most anticipated sporting event of the year.

The pop-up ‘Super Bowl City’ is set to kick off a series of events located throughout the Bay Area, both before and during the big game. While the game itself will take place at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, special events such as the NFL Experience and a fan village that’s free to the public will be housed in San Francisco to build up the excitement beforehand. A variety of interactive activities designed will showcase the sport, while also highlighting everything the Bay Area has to offer.

The city alone has enough to keep you busy for weeks, but here are a few ideas for how to make the most of your stay in the region.

Explore the City

Pick a neighborhood: San Francisco’s varied neighborhoods have strong identities that make them nearly micro-cities themselves. From the hippies of the Haight to the gay rights movement of the Castro, the Victorian mansions of Pacific Heights, the Italian delis of North Beach, and the busy markets of Chinatown, each neighborhood has a history and culture all its own.

Immerse in the food scene: There’s no better place to start a foodie exploration of San Francisco than the Ferry Building, which houses some of the city’s most beloved restaurants, cafes, and shops. Coffee lovers should be sure to hit Blue Bottle Coffee, while restaurants like Hog Island Oyster Company and the Slanted Door offer exceptional food with great views of the Bay. From there you can easily sample the best of San Francisco’s culinary scene.

See the sights: There’s nothing like a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge or a trip to the infamous Alcatraz Island, especially if it’s your first visit to the Bay.

Head to Wine Country

Napa: The world famous wine region is home to rolling hills of vines and some of the world’s best tasting rooms. Group excursions allow you to see a lot in a little bit of time. Or, small shops allow you to pick up some cheese and crackers along the way and create your own afternoon picnic!

Sonoma: The lesser-known wine region is nevertheless home to some of the area’s finest wines (and a lot fewer crowds!)

Escape to Nature

Tahoe: North America’s largest alpine lake is one of the most scenic places in America, a wide expanse of fresh, blue water surrounded by towering mountains and green forests. It’s a great place to get away, though there are plenty of recreation and entertainment options in and around Lake Tahoe as well.

Yosemite: Just a few short hours driving distance from the Bay Area, Yosemite National Park is a national treasure that will immerse you in scenic nature. Hiking trails, waterfalls, and scenic vistas await. For nature lovers, it’s a must-see.
